The ‘Land of the Big Sky’ is where you’ll Fraserburgh’s wide expanse of golden sand. Part of Aberdeenshire, it’s a revered spot for stunning views, fabulous coastal walks and an abundance of watersports opportunities. Surfing is big business in the area, as are wind powered sports. Kayaking is also well served and on those calmer summer days you’ll find a whole host of spooning opportunities.

When swells ramp up it can sometimes be a bit of a bum fight in the waves, especially close to the Broch. This left point is a locally dominated break that isn’t for the inexperienced. It’s usually best to navigate away and stick to a softer peak further along.

Waves can often be punchy, if short lived, but you’ll still have fun on the flatter days with plenty of opportunities to explore. If Fraserburgh is getting a bit much and you fancy spicing up your session with a little variety, you can always head off in Banff’s direction for some quieter paddling. There’s a whole plethora of alternative spots to choose from if you nose around.

For après fun and games there are plenty eating and drinking options to choose from with everything from awesome seafood restaurants to traditional fish and chip shops available. A variety of accommodation options are also on offer to rest your weary body at the end of a hard day’s paddling.

How to get there:

Once in Aberdeen you’ll need to navigate along the A90 towards Fraserburgh – the town is sign posted most of the way.

Facilities:

Due to Fraserburgh being a seaside town, there are a multitude of amenities and facilities available for those who fancy some ‘yakin’ action.

Hazards:

Fraserburgh is a tidal location and as such, ebbs and flow need to be taken note of. At certain times wave size will be significant while calmer periods will be better for less experienced paddlers. Other water users will need to be avoided. Cold water could also be an issue for those not used to the frigid North Sea.

Ins and Outs:

Drop in right out front – choose your peak and away you go, right along the entire length of Fraserburgh beach.

Notes:

For those who love to knock a few balls down the fairway, there are a number of high end golf courses available. After all, this is the links golfing capital of the UK.
If this isn’t floating your boat then the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses is also in the town and worth a look.

Overview:

Fraserburgh sits on the NE tip of Aberdeenshire and has a large fraternity of watersports nuts including surfers, kayakers and wind heads – all looking for their slice of salty fun. The Broch is a left hander that breaks off the point in front of the campsite. The rest of this sandy stretch has a variety of swelly peaks to choose from. During calmer spells, it’s possible to explore the coast and duck into many of the nooks and crannies you’ll find.
A relatively populated Scottish town, Fraserburgh is recorded as having 12,454 residents (2001 Census info). With large numbers of locals and visitors heading for a float, you’ll very rarely find yourself alone in the drink.

Lying 27km north of Peterhead, Fraserburgh is the biggest shellfish port in Europe and is also a major white fish dock with bustling commercial harbour. Seafood fans can’t go wrong here.

Tiree boasts a wide variety of different locations that are perfect for all levels of paddler on their day. Whatever the inclement weather you can be sure that somewhere on the island will be working.

It doesn’t matter if you want big wave surfing action or placid exploring, there’s a put in spot somewhere on the island for you.

During winter the weather at times may be severe and it could be that you end up seeking shelter indoors. During the rest of the year though, you should at least be able to get out for some on water action. If not, there’s always whiskey tasting!

If it’s blowing a hooly then short downwind runs across Loch Bhasapol can be fun and means you’ll be getting your fix. Getting blown rapidly along, safe in the knowledge that the downwind shore will catch you, is immense fun.

How to get there:

There are a couple of different ways to get to Tiree. The first is flying by plane from Glasgow or Oban and the second is by ferry from Oban. Most choose the ferry although it’s worth noting that sailings aren’t every day and even less frequent in winter.

Facilities:

In an effort to keep the beaches unspoilt there aren’t really any facilities as such. However, you won’t miss this and getting back to nature is reason alone to visit Tiree.

Wild Diamond is the local watersports facility based at Loch Bhasapol while Suds Surf School, also based onTiree, hire kayaks and can give lessons with prior booking. Blakehouse Watersports and Bike Rental are another kayak and watersports rental outfit.

Hazards:

Tiree is right on the outer limits of the Inner Hebrides and as such gets buffeted by harsh Atlantic weather – particularly during autumn and winter. Spring can be a little less hectic but still be changeable. In fact even summer has been known to have days of relentless gales.

Big surf, ocean currents and tides, rocks in places and isolation will mean anyone thinking of taking to the water in Tiree will need a degree of experience and skills under their belt. Weather can change in Tiree in an instant and those considering putting in with their equipment will need to be aware of this.

Ins and Outs:

Most spots will require a bit of a drag with your kit, particularly at beaches during low tide. In parts, some rocks will also need to be navigated, especially if you’re doing a bit of exploring around Tiree’s coast.

Notes:

Every year Tiree hosts the final round of the UK wave sailing tour which sees most of the countries windsurfing fraternity head to the island. This week long gathering is perfect for those who want to witness some high octane on water activity and large it up after hours during the many parties.

Overview:

Tiree is one of those special places in the world that’s just timeless. Except for a few extra houses/structures over the years nothing has really changed and the local population works to keep it that way.
Officially the sunniest place in the UK, Tiree is a small Inner Hebridean island that oozes charm, personality and just so happens to be an epic spot for anyone into watersports of all types– not least kayaking.

For such a small piece of rock the island boasts a number of amazingly beautiful beaches, rugged coastline and picturesque exploration opportunities.

Weather conditions change rapidly meaning if it’s not really working, wait five minutes and it’ll no doubt change to something more favourable.

The stunning beaches and little harbours are an ideal place to launch for a bit of island exploring or maybe a little bit of surf action, my personal favourite is the little island of Pabbay Mor, uninhabited with it’s own special lagoon and even a giant stone arch. Takes a bit of effort to paddle to the lagoon but well worth the effort, you may see seals porpoises and maybe the odd basking shark along the way.

Milarrochy Bay sits on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond and is a perfect base for anyone thinking of exploring the famous Loch on a sit on kayak.
The sandy bay of Milarrochy gives plenty of access to the water and allows for camping and caravanning right on site.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or advanced paddler, Loch Lomond can offer something for everyone – be that covering huge distances by circumnavigating the Loch or pottering about in the local vicinity and taking in the stunning vistas of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

The southern part of the Loch is more exposed and open to winds than that of the north so it’s always wise to be aware of where you’re going paddling and what the day’s weather may bring.
Although paddling on the Loch is safe, the weather can play a huge part in making or breaking your session and it’s always wise to have a warm set of clothing stashed in your boat if you’re contemplating exploring large distances.

As much as Milarrochy Bay is perfect for launching your kayak, this is actually one of the more exposed parts of the Loch and during breezy spells it may be worth driving to a different spot further to the north.

Launching on the Loch is free of charge, though if you use a vehicle to do this then there is a toll.

This area of Scotland boasts many other spots for a spot of paddling and the various Lochs that surround Lomond are great for varying your choice of launch.

Most of these inland stretches of water are geared up for the water sports enthusiast and welcome all to experience the breathtaking scenery for themselves

How to get there:

Head towards Glasgow and then follow the A82 towards Loch Lomond. Milarrochy Bay is then sign posted.

Facilities:

There is a well run campsite right next to the launch at Milarrochy Bay with plenty of facilities available.

Hazards:

The weather in Loch Lomond can be quite harsh, especially during the off season. It’s always wise to come prepared for the worst. Water temperature can also remain quite low, even through summer.

Ins and Outs:

Dropping in is easy. Pop your sit on kayak in the water at Milarrochy Bay and away you go.

Notes:

This area of Scotland is not just great for water sports. There are an array of other activities available such as hill walking and climbing. If all else fails then you’re only a short trip from Glasgow.

Overview:

Loch Lomond is one of the largest bodies of water in mainland Britain and is a designated National Park that offers plenty of room for paddling exploits.

In terms of paddling potential, Thurso is a well-trodden stomping ground. Surf kayakers in particular are aware of the magic this area of Scotland can dish up and as such a number of world championship competitions have been run here. Paddlers are regularly seen out in the line ups of the main break although these are usually the closed cockpit type kayaks.

It’s also worth noting that a lot of the waves in the Thurso area are reef breaks that can be extremely powerful and shouldn’t be taken lightly. On smaller days it may be possible for intermediates to have a crack but you really need to question your ability and gauge the conditions correctly.

For those after more tranquil and less hectic paddling options then there are plenty available.

Search along this stretch of coast and you’ll find numerous nooks and crannies all inviting you to explore from your boat. Drive further afield and who knows what you’ll find. You might not even come across another soul – perfect for those who are after seclusion and nothing but nature for companionship.

If the coast isn’t your bag then head inland and you’ll find a number of rivers and lochs that are perfect for a put in and float about. As with the open sea though, you’ll need to assess your chosen location carefully as during certain periods river flows can be up and not applicable for sit on kayaks.

Wherever you decide to head in this area for a spoon you’ll be amazed by the stunning scenery on offer and no two days are ever the same with the inclement weather that’s changeable to say the least.

How to get there:

You can reach Thurso by following the main A9 link road that couples Caithness to southern Scotland. Wick is the closest airport for those who wish to fly with regular domestic carriages by Flybe and Eastern Airways. The rail network links Thurso to Inverness and Ferries operate year round schedules from the islands.

Facilities:

Thurso is a town and therefore has a number of eating and drinking establishments to keep visitors entertained. Some of the lesser known put in spots don’t offer anything in the way of facilities, but when you find yourself ‘back with nature’ then you’ll probably not miss WiFi too much!

Hazards:

Heavy powerful surf breaking over shallow reef is one danger – particularly during big swells. Tidal currents and flows, harsh weather, cold temperatures and shipping traffic coming in and out of Thurso port are all things to be aware of.

Ins and Outs:

Most entrances to the water are very obvious and will require a drag to get to the put in. If you’re thinking of chancing one of the rockier spots then you may have to lift your boat to navigate a path to the water.

If you’re unsure of where to drop in then don’t take any chances.

Notes:

Thurso is a great place for those who love the outdoors in general. Walking/hiking, climbing, mountain biking and watersports are all good choices of activity when visiting this part of Britain.

If you can, bring all your gear and then you’ll be sorted for all eventualities.

Overview:

Thurso is a mythical place in surfing folklore. Literally the edge of the world in terms of where land meets water, with nothing across the vast expanse of liquid called the North Sea until you reach Iceland and Greenland.

In Thurso you’ll find a stunning and picturesque coastline, amazing coastal paddling spots featuring everything from flat water to epic surf, ferociously unpredictable weather (that can change in a heartbeat) and a warm and friendly local community ready to dole out a load of good natured banter.

Thurso is the northern most town on the British mainland and has round 9000 inhabitants. The spot looks out across the water to the Orkney Islands, and with not much standing in the way of the this remote Scottish location, swells can march unhindered and unload on the many reef shelves that are littered along this coastline.

The Isle of Mull has some stunning coastline and breath taking scenery to enjoy and on bright sunny days can be as beautiful as any further flung tropical destination. Even when severe weather blows in Mull can be a great place to embrace the elements. Mull, Iona and Ulva have a multitude of secluded/sheltered spots for bouts of harsh conditions. Getting wet couldn’t be easier.

Beaches around Mull are absolutely stunning and serve up many different personalities depending on what weather’s on offer. White stretches of sand, bubble gum blue water, rocky ledges and outcrops, mountains, caves and rolling greenery; what more could you ask for from a kayaking location.

One beach that’s particularly good for picnics and stop offs is Traigh Gheal, on the backside of the island, which during calm periods is a wonderful and secluded bay. It’s a bit of jaunt to get there as you’ll probably have to walk with your boat through the Tireegan Nature Reserve, but it’s definitely worth it and one the highlights of Mull. Other beaches included Kintra, Calgary Bay, Laggan Sands and Market Bay.

Uisken Beach is one of the most popular and boasts a shimmering shell sand expanse with views out to Colonsay and the Paps of Jura. The Uisken Beach Games are held every August with games and art activities for all ages. Uisken is also fantastic for bird watching.

Getting to the beach is easy enough by car which lies just beyond Bunessan. Follow the directions you’ll eventually come across the car park which is directly behind the sands. An awesome place for paddling, relaxing, walking and enjoying this part of the world.

How to get there:

Head for Fionnphort on the Ross of Mull. Turn left in Bunessan and Uisken is about 2 miles south.

Facilities:

There’s a car park at Uisken and toilet facilities but that’s about it.

Hazards:

Tides, currents, harsh weather and general coastal hazards are all worth making note of wherever you put in on Mull.

Ins and Outs:

Tides, currents, harsh weather and general coastal hazards are all worth making note of wherever you put in on Mull.

Notes:

The Isle of Mull is fantastic for those who love the outdoors, wildlife and immersing themselves in nature. The kayaking options are great but not the only reason for visiting.

Overview:

Boasting over 300 miles of rugged coastline the Isle of Mull is a tranquil wilderness that offers peaceful relaxation and is a beautiful base for a Highland holiday. Easy to get around and with a plethora of different put in points Mull is a great paddling destination. High peaks, tumbling burns, dramatic views, wildlife, history and atmosphere – it’s all here.

Mull is famous for its sea life; Minke Whale, Basking Sharks, Dolphin, Seals, Orcas and Puffins all visit Mull’s shoreline. What better way to observe this than from a kayak? White-tailed Eagles, Golden Eagles, Corncrakes, Otters, Red Deer and Fallow Deer can also be seen regularly. Wildlife spotting is par for the course on Mull with plenty of photo opportunities – if you’re quick!
