Shore Watersports’ annual gathering of paddle brands and equipment, along the stretch of shingle at East Wittering, has grown considerably in the last few years. 2015’s shindig was the biggest yet with all major sit on top companies, SUP brands and a smattering of accessory/lifestyle setups giving their time for one of the most popular watersports demos of the summer.
Taking over a chunk of grassland at the end of Shore Road for two days each year this is a chance for enthusiasts from all over to get some water time, try a bunch of equipment and (hopefully) have some fun in the sun. There’s always an element of risk organising an UK event – especially one that relies of Mother Nature playing ball. Shore staff must’ve had their hearts in mouths during the lead up to the weekend but Saturday dawned and although a little overcast to start there was promise of sunny weather on the cards.
Sitons meandered over to East Wittering – just across the way from our HQ – and set about catching up with friends, acquaintances and new contacts. These gatherings are great for getting the Sitons message out there as all through the event we get the opportunity to pass on our enthusiasm for the sport and help promote sit on top kayaking in the best light to hundreds of people. Hats must be doffed to all involved as coordinating so many salivating paddlers, keeping them safe and ensuring they have a good time isn’t easy. With an at the ready safety team on hand everyone was certainly stoked to have had the opportunity to try al the colourful and varied kit. By Saturday afternoon there were a few mushy waves in the mix and we can honestly say everyone in the water were having buckets of fun – kids and adults alike. Rounding off the Saturday we decamped to Shore Watersports building, a short stroll back from the beach, for the after event party. There was much chat and banter and as the sun set grinning faces were seen sloping off into the dusky light ready for a good night’s sleep.
Unfortunately Sunday’s conditions weren’t as favourable with showers and a stiffening SW wind. Time was eventually called by the organisers after it was deemed too breezy for paddlers to be on the water. Spirits were still high, however, as the previous day had been so successful. There are a few events through the summer where sit on kayakers can rock up and demo gear. Shore’s gathering is getting bigger each time it’s staged and we’re confident it won’t be long before it mutates into something even bigger. A cracking one to be a part of, Sitons will be back with the crew next year.
